Sexual predators are using teenage social media apps to contact children as young as 13 in an effort to groom them, an investigation has revealed.

One of the social networks, Blushr, was established with the help of £36,000 in government funding.

Last week it emerged that children as young as 13 could set up a profile on Tinder, although the company soon changed the rules following an earlier investigation by Good Morning Britain.

Now, GMB has investigated several other social networks which allow young children to contact each other.

As part of the investigation a researcher on the programme set up a fake profile posing as a 13-year-old girl called Amy.

Of those who contacted 'Amy' over the Hot or Not network, 70 per cent of the 60 men to contact her were over the age of consent.

Four messages were sexually explicit while one asked: 'How old are you? If you're younger that's ok.'

Six men aged over 18 contacted 'Amy' on the MyLOL app. One revealed: 'I have a fetish for younger.'

The investigation found that on the Tootifruity app, there was one image which apparently showed a sexually explicit photograph of a child.

GMB immediately reported the image to the appropriate authorities.

The owners of Tootifruity said they had leased the domain to a third party who ran the site. They said they were unaware of its content and closed the domain down as a result of the investigation.

A spokesperson for Hot or Not claimed they took 'active steps to ensure the safety of all of its users'.

They said additional measures were in place to protect younger teenagers, however, following the investigation they were discontinuing the service for children aged between 13 and 17 as 'it is clear to us that those additional measures were not enough'.

Blushr claimed they were not a dating app, but a social app and had active measures in place to stop older teens and adults interacting with younger members.

A spokesman for the government said they no longer had a relationship with the company and were unaware of any inappropriate content on their social media accounts.

MyLOL said they had a range of security measures in place which were constantly being updated as well as a method of reporting inappropriate content and blocking other users.

One mother told GMB that her daughter had been groomed on a teen dating platform.

She said a man asked her daughter to call him. 'He requested her to call him daddy, this is an older man preying on a little girl's vulnerability.

'My daughter obviously recoils when she hears the word daddy. I cry regularly about the thought that somebody has used that term in a sexual way to prey on my daughter.'

Child protection expert Jim Gamble said: 'The fundamental problem is a teen dating site - so there is an expectation that that's going to be about dating, it's going to be about hooking up and that in itself creates a context which for the younger children in that age group is going to be high risk no matter what you do.'

Speaking on Good Morning Britain the Children's Commissioner for England, Anne Longfield said: 'What I want to do from this is I want to help actually, I want to be able further this, what I intend to do is to write to some of these companies today, raise my own concerns but also talk to the specialists who know how to get this stuff off sites and keep it off.'
